A crowd of nearly 100 people came to the Basye/Orkney Springs Library on Sunday, January 30, to celebrate the library’s latest expansion. A ribbon-cutting ceremony opening up the new 15- by 30-foot room kicked off the afternoon. Five of the library’s eleven founding members were in attendance, as well as representatives from the Shenandoah County Library, the Library’s Board of Trustees, the Library’s Foundation, and Bryce Resort.
The library’s new room, funded completely with money raised through used-book sales and donations over the past 16 years, houses the library’s reference and non-fiction collection as well as provides much-need space for meetings, training sessions, children’s programs, and lap-top computer use.
The library was started by members of the local book club in 1993 and was first housed in a small room in Bryce Resort’s airport building; by 2004 it had grown to occupy the entire building. The library, which is run completely by volunteers, serves not only the local population but also the large number of visitors who come to Bryce Resort year-around. The library offers five public access computers and free wi-fi 24/7 on its grounds. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday as well as 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
