5 Year Plan
Shenandoah County Library System Five Year Plan: 2010-2014
This paper presents, in abbreviated form, what the SCLC intends to accomplish in support of the Library Goals in the next five years.
Detailed rationale, statistical supporting information, and the means that will be used to achieve these ends are available as a separate document.
Technology:
- Institute a fiber optic network to provide the SCLC system providing a Wide area Network and much improved broadband.
- Establish a computer laboratory for patrons and staff.
- Develop a sustainable computer hardware replacement plan.
- Obtain Time management software for public access.
- Obtain self-checkout stations at town libraries.
- Implement World Wide Web 2.0 features to foster communication that will enrich system’s resources.
- Explore new technologies (RFID, video equipment, federated search engines, and mobile device access to catalog) as means of keeping library system relevant and useful to the community.
Staffing
- Add one full-time Library Assistant at County Library
- Add part-time Circulation Assistant at Strasburg, New Market and Mount Jackson community libraries.
- Initiate succession planning, including addition of a part-time bookkeeper.
Facilities
- Develop additional space for the Archives Collection.
- Develop space at County Library for a computer laboratory, Young Adult area and Director’s office.
- Address space needs at several locations, especially shelving limitations at Edinburg and Strasburg.
- Improve library services in Woodstock.
Collections
- Work to develop a system for a stable materials budget.
- Monitor the impact of the allocation of resources to fund high turnover formats and genres on efforts to maintain balanced collections.
Advocacy
- Develop a sense of advocacy among Trustees
- Develop a set goals for the Foundation in support of this Plan.
- In training of library volunteers emphasize their potential power as library advocates.
