Procedure for Trainer
Suggested Procedure for Volunteer Trainers
1. General orientation to your library for the new volunteer.
2. Review Library Volunteer Orientation Form with volunteer.
3. Determination his/her willingness to assume Circ. Desk duties as opposed to other tasks.
a. Set date for training at Circ Desk
b. Encourage him/her to become familiar with
i. Library web site
ii. Library’s online resources
iii. Circulation policies posted on web site
iv. Current
4. Initial Session at Circulation Desk with volunteer.
a. Review Opening & closing procedures and cash drawer.
b. Explain use of Purple cards, PIN forms, etc.
c. Volunteer observes the trainer handle circulation operations.
d. Volunteer performs all the required circulation functions under the direct supervision of the trainer.
e. Having observed the volunteer handle transactions, determine if volunteer’s computer literacy skill are suitable for circulation responsibilities.
f. Give the volunteer a copy of Top Ten Dos and Don’ts at Circulation Desk and review it with him/her.
g. Schedule another session together.
h. Encourage him/her to work with other volunteers.
5. Assign new volunteer two shifts to work with a designated experienced volunteer. Tell him/her not to hesitate calling the County Library with questions on procedures & policies or just for help.
6. Check to see that he/she knows the library web site and collections well enough to navigate them and find resources for patrons. Remind volunteer of importance of knowing what programs are scheduled at various locations and value of checking the Current on a regular basis.
7 Schedule him/her regular shift(s).
7. Emphasize that training is an ongoing process and volunteers are expected to either attend a training session or schedule for County’s Adult Service Librarian to spend a shift with him/her.
